The last diary style entry of my 21 day review of the Mizuno Wave Rider 21s. The 21st day will be a full review. Day 19 was a 1hour 20min night run and day 20 was a rest day. This takes the total for the 20 days to 112km in the Wave Rider 21s. Stay tuned for the full review.
Day 17 & 18 of the Mizuno Wave Rider 21s included a tempo run over rolling hills followed by a rest day. The Tempo run seemed like an effort on tired legs and at times it felt like the Wave Riders were heavy. It is the first time that the weight of the shoe has come into my thinking, I think mainly because of the fatigue from yesterday's 17km run. Maybe if I am feeling like that in the future I might wear my Mizuno Wave Shadows instead, which are about 40g lighter.
98.7km's run in the Mizuno Wave Rider 21s so far. Day 16 with my Mizuno Wave Rider 21s contained an early morning 1hr 40min run around the streets. Again the Wave Riders preformed extremely well over the 16.7km traveled.
After 81km in the Mizuno Wave Rider 21s, I am super happy, I am thinking I may buy a second pair to have in my rotation. bring on the next few days so I can do my final review on how they stack up.
Day 12 was a night run in the Mizuno Wave Rider 21s. Just over an hour along the beachfront at beautiful Burleigh Beach on the Gold Coast. I felt great going up and down the headlands including the steps.
Day 13 I went out for almost 2 hours from home that included a bit of road, trail and even a creek crossing. The trail in the local park was pretty benign and the Wave Rider 21 responded well to the off road. A little later I found a trail that connected a couple of roads. This trail was a bit more technical and had a lot of leaf litter. This caused it to be a little slippery under foot at times. Not so much that it was slippery, I just felt that way. I would have much preferred to be in my Mizuno Wave Diachis or Kazansif I was going to be on that type of trail for too long. Day 14 & 15 were rest days, much needed ones, and I will be back out for runs on day 16 & 17. Total run in Mizuno Wave Rider 21 - 71km
Mizuno Wave Rider 21 Review, day 10 and 11.
On Day 10 it was an hour long Tempo which included a 10 min warm down followed by 4 10 min efforts on rolling hills with 2 minutes walking recovery in between and then a 10min warm down. The Mizuno Wave Riders were very responsive throughout the run and I had no issues with them. In total I got through 11.8km. This takes the total kms so far up to 46km and still going great with no issues to report. Day 11 was a rest day where I caught up with a couple of mates who gave me some gentle banter about writing about my shoes. Cheers Pink and Dudds :-) Nathan
Day 8 & 9 of my review of the Mizuno Wave Rider 21 included an active recovery day where I took the dogs on a 30 minute walk and a moderate 1hour 30 run. The Wave Rider 21's came along for the run but I used the Wave Rider 19's I still have for the walk.
The Mizuno Wave Rider 21s where once again great. This was the longest run in them so far. I clocked 14.2km taking the total up to 34.5km so far in the Wave Rider 21s. One thing I've noticed in the 21s that is a welcome change to previous mode;'s of Wave Riders, is I have had no need to tinker with the lacing patterns. When buying new shoes I often have to tinker with lace patterns because of hotspots. So far I haven't had any hotspots and just have the laces stock standard with a heel lock at the end for tightness. Looking forward to my tempo run tomorrow to see how they respond to the quicker paces.
I bundled these days together as two of them were rest days and the other was a 4hr trail run where I didn't wear the Mizuno Wave Rider 21. Instead I wore the Mizuno Wave Diachi 2. So Ive decided to write a comparison between the two.
Mizuno Wave Diachi Specs - 12mm drop and 270g Mizuno Wave Rider 21 Specs - 12mm drop and 289g So far I have run 290km in the Mizuno Wave Diachi 2, and the reason I like them is there similarity to the Mizuno Wave Rider line. They have been a solid shoe that took me a little time to transition to after wearing the Mizuno Wave Kazans on the trail. The only issue ive had is that about 270km the innersole has come unstuck and slips under my heel. Nothing a new pair of innersoles won't fix. I will be looking for a new pair of trail shoes for an upcoming 100km race. I'll have to see what Mizuno are doing now with their trail range, it has been a bit all over the shop the last few years with the range chopping and changing.
Mizuno Wave Rider 21 - Day 4
Today's Mizuno Wave RIder 21 run was 1hr 10mins to heart rate. In essence I was to keep my heart rate between 140-150 and if it got up to 153 I would stop and walk until it dropped. Given the heat and the fact that I have run every day this week so far, it was a very slow run. The Mizuno Wave Riders were great over this longer, but slower run. The mesh upper helped keep the feet cool in the heat. It was easily over 30 degrees Celsius whilst I was running and the humidity was in the high 60s. I feel no pain or tenderness in the lower legs, which I often do when transitionin into new shoes. Loving the comfort the Wave RIders are providing. Total kms so far - 20km
